Even though in Australia we don’t experience the seasons as much as others around the world, Autumn is still a time of cooler nights, crisp mornings and falling leaves of glorious colours.
Autumn is a time of transition for plants, soil, animals and people. It is a time where we gardeners make compost out of the summer weeds & veggie plants, refurbishing our garden beds for winter crops. For people it can be a time for mixed feelings as the days grow shorter so we look inward for light, strength & courage to carry us through the winter darkness. It is a time that challenges us to develop strong, brave, free wills to overcome anxiety and fear. Although now is the time we want to begin to hibernate, getting out to nature is always important.
Getting up to the hills in Autumn is one of our favourite things to experience nature's wonders, the scenery of flaming contrast, hear the trickling water and spot a few native inhabitants. This week we hiked on the Heysen Trail from Bridgewater to Cox Creek. Seeing the rainbow of leaves this time of the year is very special. Puddles formed for splashing in, streams running, birds happily chirping, and fellow walkers with rosy cheeks politely greet you. The walk is flat, easy for all ages and not too far. We parked just by the playground near the Bridgewater Mill and walked north, up to the small fairy garden.
Wear adequate shoes as it can get muddy.
