What do you love most about summer? Is it the extended hours of sunlight, the delicious warmth of slow days, the therapy of sun on your skin at the beach, or the abundance of stone fruit, cherries, watermelon and fresh basil?
It is a season of simple pleasures, sweet tastes, and being in our bodies as we make the most of easy living. Hopefully, it is a time of year where we can take some of the load off, and feel physically and mentally lighter.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is the most Yang time of year, it is governed by the fire element which corresponds to the heart and the small intestine meaning it is a time to be social, laugh and enjoy life. A time to eat light cooling foods like watermelon, cucumber and leafy greens. We are now transitioning into Late Summer which is governed by the Earth element and corresponds to the Spleen and Stomach. It is a time to focus on nourishment with grounding foods like carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin and rice to lay the foundation for the coming season transition. As the weather cools try to support your digestion with warm cooked meals. It is a good time for organising, harvesting ideas and finding balance between activity and rest.
If we haven’t already, this midpoint in the season is a beautiful time to reflect on everything summer has to offer, and ask ourselves whether we are savouring these gifts. For although summer is the pinnacle of the year in terms of peak season produce, flavour, and simple living, like all things ephemeral, it too shall fade.
Like the last sunset of summer, this time of ease and abundance will soon be behind us. So make the most of what you love about this vibrant season and cherish these simple pleasures.
See you in store soon,
The Simple Market Team
